It's a never-ending madness.
I grew up watching anime, both on cable and public networks. However, I didn't start watching "grown-up" anime till I my last year of high school. It's one of my favorite hobbies, since I'm in love with Japanese media.
About my anime preferences, you can see them summed up in that topster picture. I love anime that is truly unique or brain-teasing, something colorful and enthrailling. I love most genres and enjoy both classics and new stuff.
However, I can't stand (modern) isekais and gooner bait/cookie-cutter stuff. I simply can't. Like I said earlier, I need something unique to be in board with an anime/manga series. If your story is set in a boring fantasy world with a generic mc surrounded by beautiful women I won't watch it ever.
